Eight of the world’s elite Counter-Strike teams will battle at the Barclay’s Center in September for a prize pool of $200,000 and some snuggle time with the ESL One trophy in the Big Apple.
After winning IEM Chicago 2019, Team Liquid aim to continue leading the Intel® Grand Slam Season 3 pack, but the likes of Astralis, ENCE and a full gallery of top 10 ranked teams vying for victory with a vengeance have a different plan. This is what we can expect from ESL One New York 2019:
Liquid: The Fort Knox
Team Liquid are sitting on a gold mine of accomplishments and are looking to uncover more treasure in Brooklyn. Donning the No. 1 rank in the world with almost three times as many points as 2nd-placed Team Vitality, plus six consecutive premier event titles in 2019, Team Liquid bear their diamond encrusted pickaxes moving into the latter stages of the year. Liquid players have recently said during interviews that they’re a team of momentum and have little doubt of slowing down their tirade of turbulence. ESL One New York 2019 shines as another opportunity for a trophy and Intel® Grand Slam arms race contribution.
Astralis: Reclaiming the Throne
The world’s former No. 1 squad and inaugural champions of the Intel® Grand Slam have recently found reclaiming the top-dog slot arduous. While placing 3rd-4th at ESL One Cologne 2019 and 5-6th at the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals is no easy feat, losing to Team Liquid in France beaconed a wake up call to the Danish titans. After all, it was not long ago when the Danes won final after final to the NA challengers throughout 2018. Undoubtedly Astalis possess the elements necessary for success, ESL One New York 2019 will show whether The Great Danes are ready to sit on the throne once more.
ENCE: Cold as Ice
Recently earning the silver medal at IEM Chicago 2019, the decisive losses to Team Liquid 0:3 in the Grand Finals at the United Center brought notions of terror for the Finnish side. Placing 2nd at the IEM Katowice CS:GO Major Championship and a recent 2nd place finish at IEM Chicago supports the supposition that ENCE are a threat for the win in New York. A breakthrough win in Madrid against none other than Astralis earlier in the year further backs this up, but ESL One Cologne was not kind to them. Which ENCE will we see in September?
NRG: Stan and the Law
Having only competed in two premier events with their latest addition of In-Game Leader “stanislaw”, NRG are hoping to follow in their American adversaries’ footsteps. Placing 5-6th at ESL One Cologne 2019 with a series victory over FaZe advertised healthy insight into the fresh roster. However, back-to-back series losses to both Liquid and Vitality portrayed the prominence of pecking order. Hopefully with some time to practice before ESL One New York 2019 and with an interesting rebrand, NRG can bring the potential we know their star-studded lineup suggests.
G2: The Fractious French
Placing 2nd at the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals in their home country was a phenomenal indicator of G2’s rise, and with the success Team Vitality have seen we can deduce France is rising back to vintage status. However, their loss to Liquid and then consequently being eliminated to a meddlesome MIBR roster at IEM Chicago indicates a fracture in the backbone of G2. Irrespective of a disappointing result against MIBR in Chicago, G2 hold much promise moving into ESL One New York 2019 and are capable of dismantling not only all the teams in attendance, but Team Liquid too.
FaZe: A Clan of Capability
The 2019 season has been somewhat cursed with clumsy results, however the profound nature and impact that the FaZe roster exhibits can’t be overlooked. Placing 5-6th at the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals was quickly overshadowed considering their previous 9-12th at IEM Sydney 2019 and recent 9-12th at ESL One Cologne 2019. Whilst NiKo shines with brilliance consistently, the rest of his squad must lift their game for the cogs of FaZe to shift correctly.
eUnited: Underdog Urgency
Encompassing a lot of controversy, the American roster of eUnited must utilize ESL One New York 2019 as a proving ground for themselves. Flawlessly qualifying for ESL One New York 2019 with series victories over INTZ, compLexity and FURIA bode a much needed confidence boost for the American side. Definitely considered an underdog, eUnited must employ a “nothing-to-lose” mentality which might just be key for the Americans to open their door to success and climb the rankings.
With seven of the total eight teams confirmed for ESL One New York 2019, the Big Apple is shaping up to be one of the most competitive tournaments of the year. Exhibiting teams from the US, France and Europe each with their own story line and struggles, we believe it’s an event you won’t want to miss out on.
